Relief Kits Assembled To Help Disaster Victims

January -March 14, Details Below

If you have been wondering how you can somehow help all the people recently affected by fires, flooding, tornados and earthquakes, here’s your chance. The local unit of the Carson Valley United Methodist Women will be collecting and assembling hygiene kits to send to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) so those kits can, in turn, be given to disaster victims.  UMCOR is often one of the first agencies to arrive in disaster areas and these kits provide immediate relief. Without volunteer help emergency kits can not be delivered.  UMCOR has a VERY SPECIFIC list of items to go in each kit. (Click here to view list.)Money can be given to Len or volunteers in the church office.  There will be a collection box in the Narthex of the church for donations starting in January. We will continue to collect until March 14 when we will assemble the kits during our general membership meeting.  The kits will be given to volunteers in the First United Methodist Church of Carson City who personally deliver them to the collection center at UMCOR West in Salt Lake City, Utah.  If you think this is something you would like to do in the future, UMCOR West provides many opportunities to assemble relief kits of all kinds including school kits and personal hygiene kits.  Questions? Call CVUMW vice president Ann Santos at 623-340-6914.

UMW Starts 2019 with Look at Human Rights & Dignity

Thursday, January 10 @ 11:30 am

Following our 2019 theme, the “Sisterhood of Grace”, the Carson Valley United Methodist Women will observe human trafficking month by highlighting women rising up for human dignity and rights during their monthly general membership meeting Thursday, Jan. 10, in the education room of the church. The potluck luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. with the program starting around 12:15. Great Northern District UMW president Debbie Cole will also conduct a brief installation service of 2019 officers. The UMW has a history of helping women historically seen as nothing more than property. Suzy Schell Wennhold will report on the “Comfort Women” of Korea and the Sunlit Sister Center in South Korea--supported by UMW--which helps women ostracized by society.  The local unit has donated funds to the Gum Moon Women’s Residence in San Francisco for many years.  How do we respond personally and collectively to these issues? Learn more Jan. 10.

"Love Offering" For Children In India

Donation Opportunities Mid January-Mid February

Once again the Carson Valley United Methodist Women ask our congregation if we could help send money to children in India.  These children were served by missionaries Steve and Carol Johnson until they retired.  The ministry passed to Pastor Jay and Suji Garnipudi of the U.S. non-profit, "Seed for the Sowers - India" who will visit the Carson Valley in February.  In the past we collected money in the fall for Christmas boxes. This year we will collect our “Love Offering” (think Valentine’s Day)  mid-January until Jay and Suji arrive in mid-February. The boxes cost about $20 each and will include the plastic box itself. (The box can then be used to store what personal items they have in a one-room apartment full of an entire family.) There will be pencils, erasers, paper for school and a Christian message book. Hygiene articles like toothbrushes, toothpaste, a comb, socks, and a blanket are just a few of the other items to be included--all bought on the local economy, thus helping more local people. Thank you for helping to make this a memorable gift for these children. Envelopes will be available at church starting mid-January for your donations, or just put “Christmas boxes” in the memo line of your check.  Thank you!

In addition to our inspirational and uplifting worship services, the CVUMC also has a great variety of events for the whole family! Join us here for family movie nights, luncheons, potlucks, Bible study groups, seasonal celebrations & lots of fun volunteer opportunities!  Our website and monthly newsletter are  great ways to stay current on upcoming events.  Please scroll down the entire page  to catch all the action this month. We'll see you here!
